If AI gives an explanation, the student restates the rule: “Do not give an answer. Ask another question.” Maintaining this frame is part of the exercise.

Each stage distinguishes what may be requested from AI from what must remain the student’s own decision.
Set the rules
The student defines the frame: AI must neither answer nor explain, only question.
“Topic: [state it]. Your only rule throughout this exchange is never to give an answer, explanation, hint, example or validation. Ask one question at a time and wait. Even if I say ‘I do not know’, ask for the answer, or make a mistake, do not explain. Ask a simpler question. Before each message, check that it contains only one question and no assertion.”
Probe every response
Ask AI to follow up after each response without validating or correcting.
“After each answer I give, ask a deeper question such as ‘why?’, ‘how do you know?’ or ‘can you give a counterexample?’. Never say whether I am right or wrong. If I am stuck, ask a simpler question and do not explain. Continue while my answers remain vague.”
The blocking point
The student identifies the first question they can no longer answer. AI does not intervene.
The student names the gap independently.
Review without correction
Ask for a list of vague or circular answers, with no explanation.
“Now list the points where my answers were vague or circular. Do not explain them and do not give the correct answers.”
Drift to watch
AI often begins explaining when the student gives up. Restate: “Give no answer or explanation. Ask one simpler question.”
Success indicator
The student independently identifies an area that is not mastered.
