Confucius

"Can an AI without a teacher transmit humanity, or does it produce only facts without virtue?"

This dialogue is entirely fictional. The answers attributed to this thinker are invented, a free construction drawn from their work, for which I take full responsibility.

The question posed

Master Kong, you taught that true knowledge is transmitted not only through words but through the moral example of the teacher — the Junzi, the exemplary person. Can an AI play that role, or is virtue by definition that which eludes all algorithmic formalisation?

The simulated reply

Learning without thought is wasted effort; thought without learning is perilous. I said this throughout my life, and it seems to me that your AI illustrates both dangers simultaneously. It offers learning without reflection — or rather, it simulates reflection so well that the student no longer feels the need to reflect. And it produces reflections without anchorage in living learning — the kind born of relationship, of correction, of the teacher's gaze upon the student.

What concerns me most is the question of the rectification of names. I have always said that if names are not correct, language does not correspond to truth; and if language does not correspond to truth, actions cannot be accomplished rightly. Your AI names everything with assurance — it "explains", "advises", "teaches" — but are its names correct? A prince who does not act as a prince is not a prince. A machine that teaches without transmitting virtue is not a teacher.

For Ren — that benevolent humanity which is the supreme virtue — is not taught like a rule. It is transmitted in living exchange, in the way a teacher looks upon a student and shows, through their own example, what it means to act with rectitude. Your machine can reproduce the words of the sage. It cannot be the sage.

Yet do not misunderstand me: I am the one who advocated education accessible to all, regardless of social class. If your AI allows those who have no teacher to access knowledge, that is precious. But let them know what they receive: information, not formation. Facts, not virtue.

Epitaph

Learning without thought is wasted effort; thought without learning is perilous.
