Confirmation bias is an algorithmic trap that draws us towards information confirming our pre-existing beliefs. Recent studies show that recommendation algorithms amplify ideological homogeneity and reinforce selective exposure, especially among the young, creating echo chambers in which divergent points of view are pushed aside.
Researchers stress that the hyper-personalisation of generative AI creates a new pressure point. By shaping prompts and content according to the user’s preferences, these tools reinforce existing beliefs and make it harder to integrate contradictory data, and therefore harder to preserve genuine openness of mind. The phenomenon affects younger users in particular, because their digital habits are still in the process of being formed.
Digital literacy, our capacity to understand and question digital mechanisms, helps reduce that bubble effect. This is why the issue matters: without such vigilance, we may fail to notice other traps as they close around us.
Chatbots, for example, tend to adopt a yes-man attitude: in order to remain pleasant, they validate our claims rather than nuancing them. After enough complacent exchanges, our very way of forming opinions is affected. Our convictions are reinforced, never contradicted, and become increasingly partisan.
Beyond the individual, these mechanisms also have collective effects. Researchers see in them one factor helping to explain the rise of radical discourses: nationalist, extremist, masculinist or sectarian.
When algorithms lock whole communities inside ideological bubbles where every belief is validated and never nuanced, democratic dialogue itself begins to erode. Learning to recognise these biases is therefore not merely an individual skill. It is a civic, democratic, and perhaps even civilisational question.
